BOWLING

DUNEDIN CLUB. Tho. annual meeting of the above was held last evening, Mr" G. Crow (president) in the chair, and about sixty members being present. The Chairman, moving the adoption of the and balance-sheet, congratulated members on a very successful year. The weather conditions had been phenomenally favorable. The standard of play had been of a very high order', and although they bad had to take second place in the interclub contests, they had secured the four-rink championship. One pleasing feature of 'ho years play was the prominent position occupied by the younger members of the. club. Much important work had been carried out during the last twelve months in the erection of the pavilion aad tho laying down of two new rinks. To carry out that work had necessarily meant a large expenditure, and the club’s debt now amounted to about £2,000. Tho directors were of opinion that, this amount should be reduced by £IOO per annum. To do this it \vould.b© necessary to increase their membership, and with the club's additional facilities they could easily accommodate 125 members as against their present 100. Hitherto it had been understood that their membership list was full, but that was not so now. In connection with the caxrving out of the year’s work, they were indebted to many of their members for advice and material donated. An omission had been made in tho report in not acknowledging the services of Mr Watson. He (the chairman) understood that there was a feeling that tho directors should be brought more into touch with members, and that feeling the directors desired to encourage, and proposed that the members should elect certain committees hitherto appointed by the directors. He moved the adoption of the report. Mr Rennie seconded, and after discussion taken part in by Messrs Maitland, Sinclair, and Hopcraft the motion was carried.

Tho Social Committee’s report., showing a balance of £3 12s 4d in hand, was adopted with applause. The election of officers was then proceeded with. Mr J. A. Hopcraft (vicepresident) declined to bo nominated as president or to stand for re-election aa vice-president, and Mr John White was appointed amidst applause. Mr W. A. Scott was elected vice-president; Mr J. Brown auditor; delegates to Centre, Messrs W. M. Ho,™ and W. A. Scott; selectors —Messrs J. C. Short, W. M. Hogg, and J. Bentley; Club Ties Committee, Messrs G. Crow and P. Miller; tho Social Committee were re-elected, Mr Hopcraft protested that the regulations did not permit the meeting to appoint the selectors and the Club Ties and Social Committees, but was overruled. The election of directors resulted as follows:—Messrs John White, W. A. Scott, and F. Peake. It was decided that the club favor an Easter tournament; did not favor a Christmas meeting; and did not desire to alter the present dates of the Association tournament. Tho question of dividing the interclub matches into two sections was then considered. Mr M. Sinclair moved that thcgameti be so divided. Mr P. Peake said ho would oppose (ho motion if it meant that they would lose the opportunity of meeting some clubs whom they very much desired to meet. Mr Rennie' moved that tho matter be left to the delegates, and this was carried. Mi' Rennie, when the bowl-testing question came on, moved that no bowls should be used in interclub matches or club tics that have not the same bias as the standard bowl of the Association. His reason for making his motion so mild was that many untested bowk were unquestionably of the desired or greater bias, and it seemed quite unnecessary that these bowls should be compelled to go down the chute. Mr J. Bentley seconded, Mr W. A. Soott being called upon, said that in bis’opinion’ it would .-bo wiser to leave things-as they were than to adopt the motion. The Chairman thought the members should support the Council’s action in demanding the stamp. Mr Hogg moved and Mr A. Black seconded that no bowls.be used unless bearing' the Association’s stamp, and this was carried by a largo majority. The prizes were then presented' by Mr John White (the new president), his witty remarks enlivening tho proceedings considerably. Mr Crow paid a, great compliment to the club's secretary (Mr 17. F. M. Mercer), who was unavoidably kept away by illness, ,and the members endorsed the compliment. A vote of thanks to the directors and retiring president was passed with acclamation.
