THROUGH SOUTHERN EYES

AUCKLAND TACTICS CIUTICISED

[From Oun Parliamentary Eepoeteil]

WELLINGTON, July 8. Tho House went into roars of laughter last nisrht over Mr Wright’s criticism of Auckland’s claims. The member for Wellington Fouth raid that they had heard a good deal about justice for Auckland this session. He wanted to say that, as far as he was concerned, ho would do his best to see that Auckland received justice every time, just as ho would vote for justice for .Southland; but he wanted to warn Southern member?, and more particularly Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki, and Wellington members to be careful in regard to the position they took up with relation to the Northern combine. The Auckland members had behind them a shrewd commercial man, who was this movement. Ho was, of course, referring to the member for Auckland East, He would even warn Auckland members against being tied to the chariot tvheols, but ho supposed that advice would not be heeded. Tho position that had arisen reminded him of tho story of the monkey, tire chestnuts, and the cats. Auckland was the monkey, and Hawke’s Bay and Wellington were asked to play the part of the cats, and haul tho chestnuts out of the tire. The member for Auckland East was no doubt honest in his intentions, and ho did not blame him. That gentleman was essentially a commercial man, with his heart, soul, body, and mind wrapped up in Auckland. When the member for Auckland East said it was not parochialism,” the speaker could only reply that lie was like the Scotchman, and* had his doubts. Mr Wright added that any proposal to spend money in Auckland on payable railways or public works would meet with his support, bnt ho was not going 'O vote for tho expenditure of public money on lines that would not give a fair return.
