LAWN TENNIS ASSOCIATION

A LENGTHY MEETING,

[Tek United Pp.ess Association.]

WELLINGTON, July 8. A special meeting of the Council of tile Lawn Tennis Association - was held last evening. Mr H. R. Gore gave notice to move ™ following addition to rule 10: Each delegate shall rote according to his discretion on questions upon which ho has received no instructions from tiie Association which he represents, out when such instructions have been given each delegate must adhere strictly to his instructions.”

ic/1 T G ‘ N * Goldic moved—“ That rule “ i aineiiaG<l as follows:—The order oi . business at all annual general meetings of the Council shall be: Loll call, reading and adoption of minutes, report, and balance-sheet, notices ot motion, motions of which notice has been given, nomination and election of ofheers and committeemen.” There was considerable discussion on the motion, and the matter was referred to a committee to draft rules to be submitted to the Provincial Associations before the next meeting of the Council ' Professor Hunter moved—“ Thai, irrespective of where the Davis Cop is to be played for, the New Zealand championship meeting should be held at the Ea me place as the Davis Cup contest.” The Canterbury delegates favored holding the championships in different parts.

Mr Black (Otago) thought that the holding of the two contests in different places was essential. He moved an amendment to this effect.

The amendment was lost by 30 votes to 15. The associations voting for it were Canterbury and Auckland, and two of Otago’s fave votes also went for it, as well as the votes of two vicepresidents. The motion was then carried.

Mr E. J. Ross (Canterbury) moved and Mr Wright (Canterbury) seconded —“That owing to the fact that the Management Committee have proved by their past actions that they arrogate to themselves powers not given to them by the rules, and also observe secrecy with regard to their actions, refusing as they have done to reveal correspondence and the minutes of business done in connection with such an important matter as the playing off of the challenge round of the Davis Cup contest to properly constituted delegates_ of an association, the various associations comprising this Council have lost confidence in the Management Committee as such.”

The Canterbury delegates complained that the Committee had ignored the Canterbury Association in the matter of the fixing of the place for holding the. Davis Cup contest, and that the Committee had been guilty of unsportsmanlike tactics and want of frankness. Christchurch had a special claim on the fixture, hut the Committee had deliberately overlooked this, and did hot forward Canterbury’s application for the contest to the Australasian Union. .......

Mr Peacock defended the action of the Committee. There had been no slight on Canterbury, and no association had ever been refused access to the Committee’s records.

Mr Ross (Canterbury) claimed that the Committee’s action had been unconstitutional. The Council, not the Committee, should have recommended the venue of the Cup contest to the Australasian Association.

Professor Hunter said New Zealand had rendered itself odious by allowing the management of the blue ribbon of the tennis world to descend to an unseemly squabble.

The motion had not been put to the vote at midnight.

WELLINGTON RETAINED FOR THE

CONTEST.

WELLINGTON, July 8. The Lawn Tennis Association last night decided by 32 votes to 15 in favor of Wellington as the place in which to play the Davis Cup contest.
