CROWN LANDS
THE DEPARTMENTAL REPORT. [From Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON, July 8. The annual report of the Crown Lands Department, presented to Parliament today, says that 2,582 new settlers and their families, estimated at 8,000 souls, went on the land. The total area opened during the year was 2,326,037 acres. There are at present 1,354,048 acres of Crown lands and 156,837 acres of native lands under surrey for settlement purposes. Of ordinary Crown lands surveyed 929,266 acres are chiefly unfl.'r the optional system and pastoral runs, while 424,782 acres national endowment.
The total number of selectors under the Land for Settlements Act is 21 less than for the previous year, but the area taken up is 1,514,622 acres more,- 288 selectors having taken up 95,698 acres. The selectors of national endowment lands totalled 615, the area selected being 1,024,537 acres, yielding a revenue of £78,408.
