The following Dunedin candidates were successful at tho recent examinations for the State registration of nurses under the Nurses’ Registration Act, 1902; —Minnie Jeffrey, Evelyn Nosworthy, Eliza j APKnight, Letitia Campbell, Dora Moore, 1 Grace Calder, and Isabel Cruickshank. Tho delegates representing tho newlyformed Retail Tobacconists' Association of New Zealand, who have been sitting in conference in Wellington,. have elected the following officers:—President, Mr J. 18. Speed; vice-presidents—Messrs S. Jacobs iDnnedin), J. Goss (Wanganui), J. Ross (Napier), Bolitho (Auckland), and S. ■ Simpsons v Uiristchureh); secretary and treasurer, Mr H. B. Allen; auditor, Mill. Ivory; t'-ustees, Messrs H. Hyde (HastI mgs) and S. G. Percy (Ashburton). 1 Mr W. F. Alexander, of tho literary ’staff of the ‘Dominion,’ Wellington, has i been appointed editor of the Tima-ra ‘Her- | aid.’ * | A. Bombay message advises the death of Captain Kvnaid llawdon, Joseph Haw-- ; don’s grandson, and son of Mr and Airs , Arthur Hawdon, of South Canterbury, the | hero of the Quetta journey, an account of which was published in ‘The Times’ on | April 26, 1905. Captain Hawdon died of i cholera at Sprangagar, in Kashmir. Sir Charles Hardingo, on his appointment as Viceroy of India, has been created a baron. A Wellington message states that Mr W. Dinnie, ex-Gommissdoner of Police, has i been appointed president of one of the ! Maori Land Boards. Tho particular Board , to which ho has been appointed has not j yet transpired. Mr C. E. Keast was, at the conclusion I of last night’s meeting of the Otago Centre of the N.Z.A.U., presented by the Execu- ; live of that body with an ornamental clock | encased in glass. The presentation was i given as a mark of esteem for the manner jin which Mr Keast had carried out the j duties of president during the year. Air I A. 0. Fenwick made the presentation, and, j together with other members, spoke in (eulogistic terms of MrKeast’a good work. Mr Keast suitably responded. I Atvo. E. Bowling, formerly of Dunedin, who js clerk of tire Magistrate’s Court- at Westport, was recently admitted by Air Justice Sim as a barrister of the- Supreme Court of New Zealand.
