CITY POLICE COURT.

Idle Women.—Matilda Hunt, who pleaded guilty to being deemed a rogue and vagabond having insufficient lawful means of support, and haying been previously convicted as an idle and disorderly person on February 20, 1907, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence any time within twelve months, on condition that sho remains in the Salvation Army Home for that period. The Magistrate advised her to leave her old haunts after coming out of the Homo. Letitia Berkley pleaded not guilty to a similar charge.—Constables Butler and Edwards gave evidence as to the woman’s ways of life. They were not good.—She admitted several previous convictions, one (in 1904) being for keeping a notorious house.—Sentenced to one year’s imprisonment with hard labor. Wife Desertion. —Charles Hart (for whom Mr A. C. Smith appeared) was further remanded to appear at the Wanganui Court on the 14th inst. to answer a charge of wife desertion. Chief-detective Herbert, in applying for tho remand, explained that Hart’s wife desired that her husband should be remanded to Wanganui.

A Charge of Theft.—Thomas Jenkins, for whom Mr Hay appeared, pleaded not guilty to a charge that at Dunedin on June 18 he did steal £4 17s, the property of William Harrison.—Chief-de-tective Herbert applied for a remand, explaining that the theft was committed in the Oban Hotel. The money was put down on the counter as change to another man, and the accused grabbed it and cleared out, taking the train immediately for the country, where he worked as a farmer beyond Balclutha. Jenkins was a married man with a family.—Remanded to July 13, bail being fixed at £SO, for himself two sureties of £25 each or one of £SO.
