Mr J. Jackson Purdie, on the eve of his marriage, received a presentation from his employees last night. Mr W. Sinclair made tho presentation, and tho recipient acknowledged tho gift and expression of good wishes. Miss Rose Alice Kerr, of Waikouaiti, has passed the examination for tho diploma of associate in music of the Victoria College of Music, London. Mrs Connor, who is about to leave Dunedin on a trip Home, was presented yesterday with a travelling rug from the employees of the Leviathan Hotel. Sir James Reid, Physician-in-Ordinary to tho King, believes that His Majesty caught a slight cold during his journey from London to Biarritz, but there is no fever. As a precaution the King remained indoors on Tuesday. Mr Duncan Alves, erstwhile of Dunedin, but now of London, has very large interests in the newly-formed British New Guinea Company, of which Earl Ranfmiy is president. Mr John Alves in coming out to Australia in the interests of the company. Mr William Reid, one of tho oldest and most rgspeclcd of the residents of Port Chalmers, died early yesterday morning. Ho was born in 1820 at Noes, Fortroso, Ross-shirc, .Scotland, and was educated at Fortroso Academy and at Moray Place Training College, Edinburgh. After occupying several teaching positions in the Midland counties of Scotland, he became master at Kieldcr Castle, Northumberland, and was an elder in Falslono Church, of which tho late Rov. Dr Stuart, afterwards of Knox Church, Dunedin, was then minister. In 1860 Mr Reid emigrated to Dunedin, where he for some time taught a private school. On the resignation of Mr Colin Allan, first master of the Port Chalmers School, Mr Reid was appointed his successor. This position he held until Port Chalmers School was raised to tho status of a grammar school, when he retired. Since then he has lived privately. He took a great interest in church matters, and almost Ills last transaction Mas to promote a scholarship, mainly by hie own subscription, for one of bis old pupils who was proceeding to the University.
