YACHTING

OTAGO YACHT AND MOTOR BOAT CLUB The last of tho series of club races took ■ ;i- place on Saturday afternoon before a large attendance of yachting enthusiasts, the chief attraction being the sailing of the Champion Yacht Race. Some nine boats crossed tho line—viz., loraugi, Tucana, >»aimana, Matua, Annie, Carina, Euccrn, trio,, and Vagabond. A good full-sail nor • easier was blowing. The only boat to carry a topsail' was the lorangi, and in all probability she would have done better without it. The first item of interest was the Waimana crossing the line two seconds before the gun fired, and being recalled. last some two minutes in .working back to her place, and, as a matter of fact, she failed to actually cross the line. Still, as she was penalised to some extent, and only nno member of tho Sailing Committee (Mr Morgan) being present, he has decided to refer the matter to the General Committee lo decide. On tho run to the buoy off the wharf lorangi assumed the lead, closely lollowcd by Tucana and Matua, while the Waimana brought up tho rear. On the beat to Challis’s the lorangi still forged lihoad, and it looked as if she would easily ' give tho other competitors the necessary time allowance; but Tucana, Matua, and Waimana were making longer boards, and on reaching the rounding buov lorangi had truly gained some 3min from Waimana, who was sailing beautifully, and had worked ■from last to second position. The . first round was completed by lorangi at 4h 29min 28? Ec, Tucana 4h 3osec, Waimana 4h 55min 6sec, Matua 4h 38rain, Annis 4h 38mm 55sec, Carina 41i 42min lssec, Vagabond, 4h 44min 7sec, Eileen 4h 44min Sssec, Iris 4h 46min 50sec. The second round saw no alteration in the positions, except that Tucana appeared more lively, and m this round left Waimana some 2jmin in the rear, the result, deducting the time, being:— Waimana (15min), Ih 53min 35sec. 1; Tucana (9min), Ih Sdniin 40sec, 2; lorangi (scratch). Ih 57min 2sec, 3. The other boats to finish the course were Matua and Carina. II the Committee decide that Wainiana must he disqualified, and in all probability they will, Tucana will win the championship by some 20sec from lorangi. —Second Class Yacht Race.— Vagabond was the only starter, and sailed over the course. . —Third Class Yacht Race.— Redwing (liniin) 1 Rum (scratch) ... 2 Redwing won on time’allowance, being about 30sec behind Euru. —Motor Boat Race.— , Waterwifceh (19min) 1 Huana (14min) 2 Query (7jmin) 5 Also started: Pacific, Matai, Gertie. The officials present were: Vice-com-modore Moller. Messrs Olipbaut, Morgan, , Bedford, and Warren. THE SAYONARA CUP. In the second race at Melbourne on Saturday the course was a triangular one, seven miles each way. Tho Sayonara was quicker off the mark, but Cuiwalla 111., lying more to windward, forged ahead. After the race had been a few minutes in progress, tbe wind, which was light at the start, freshened, and the Cuiwalla, beautifully handled, continued to improve her position. She rounded the first buoy 4miu 15sec ahead of tho Sayonara. The Victorian yacht made this up. but lest ground at the second stretch, passing the second buoy 4min behind tho Cuiwalla. On the run homo with the wind behind her the Sayonara showed to better advantage than earlier in the race, but conkl not make up the lest ground, the Cuiwalla beating her home by about omin. The winner’s time was 3h ITmia.
