IRRIGATION
IN CENTRAL OTACIO. INSTALMENT 01~THE BIG SCHEME. {Special to the Star.] WELLINGTON, 'Mareh 4. The Government havo decided to make a start with the important undertaking of irrigation in Central Otago. It has been tlecided io call for tenders for carrying out the first section of this work, and the area to benefit will bo Stewart's Settlement. It is expected that this portion of tho scheme- will eventually cost £5.000 to complete, but the whole work is of much greater magnitude, a loan of £1.000,000 Slaving been authorised for the purfoso by Parliament. Tho Tlon. I!. Mivetr/.ie, Minister of Public Works, informs me that two survey parties are at work in Central Otago obtaining ..lata for tho general scheme. Creeks are being gauged to ascertain tho water supply, levels are being taken for constructing water races, and search is being mado for possible sources of hydroelectrical energy, with which to pump the vitalising tluid* up to the higher levels. Stewart's Settlement belongs to the Government, baring been taken under tho Land for Settlements Act. and it has been loaded for irrigation purposes.
