THE SUMMER SHOW

A RECORD GATE. 16,000 PRESENT. Blessed with a day of sunshine and fortified by an excellent show, the Committee of tho Otago A. and P. Society expected a record crowd at Taiuma Park yesterday. They were not disappointed. As early as two o'clock there were over 8,000 people present, and at 3.50 it could not have been under 16.000. Judging was then done with, and a programme of sports immediately followed the parade of prize beauts. It be mentioned here that the cob with which Mr S. Solomon, K.C.. carried a\vay first_ place yesterday has secured forty prizes. Yesterday was to be his last appearance in the ring. SPORTING EVENTS. Messrs F. Freeman, H. Price, and T. Ritenic managed the military competitions and the trots, and directed the other events. For the Rescue Race the competitors were grouped in fours, and ran four heats, the winner of each coming forth in the final. 'I he heats were won pretty easily, but the final furnished an exciting finish, in which Corporal Cuff (N.O. Mounted Rifies) struggled home nearly a length in front of W. A. Gardiner, a civilian from 'Evansdale. who was catching the corporal at every stride. Sergeant Cowio (Otago Hussars) was third, and Trooper Jones (N.O. Mounted Rifles) fourth. The Trot for ponies not over 15 hands brought out a field of nine, and Eric Cullen (Allanton) won. Thomson and Co.'s pony, ridden by Miss Farris, finished second, but was disqualified for going outside one of the posts, and G. VI. Luke got second money, whilst J. VI. Samson was placed third. Twenty started in the Trot for ponies not over fourteen hands, and a rattling finish saw Eric Cullen win again, ho passing A. Aiicheson in the last stride or two. I). Vlnnro was third. An extra rate for the ponies ridden by girls proved to be a gift to Thomson and Lxt.s pony, with Miss Farris up. Eleven horses, most of .them of a good hunter type, competed in the variety jumping. Mr J. H. M'Nivcn judged this event. I'irst. prize wont to Herbert Ehvorthy, of fimaru. by the aid of the useful blue roan Ironbark. who, ridden cleverly by Mr Orton, made not the shadow of a mistake. Mr Ortcir also rode tho winner of the seeeiiid prize, Liberty, an active bav: and third money went to F. J. White, of Waimate, with a big bay named Victory, who won his place after a run off' with the mounts of Geary and Docherty. In this run off, by the way. Docherty's brown blundered at the double, and the rider showed cleverness in recovering his scat. The wrestling on horseback proved rather one-sided and tame. Only two teams entered—one from North Otago and the other from the Otago Hussars. Within three minutes the last Dunedin man reached the ground in a hurry. The bare-back riding and jumping competition was very interesting. There was the keenest competition among the seven men entered. First place went to Vlr VI. Orton, ot limaru, a well-known Canterbury huntsman. Vlr R. J. Martin, a member of the Waimate hunt, was second on Big Mac. Hie high jump finished at the sft 6in notch.- E. J. Docherty (of Sutton) on trooper and R. J. Martin on Big .Mac were neck and neck right through, and divided the prize money. T. Geary was third. GENERAL. 1 he takings at tho gates for the twodavs were £690, or £75 better than last year. In addition to this the Committee collect £129 9s from the tramways department, this representing what is due 011 the combined tram and ground tickets. Our thanks and admiration are due and now very heartily offered, to Vlr H. V. Fulton (secretary), Mr Brent (assistant secretary), and Vlr Charters (president) for llicir courtesy in assisting us, and for the splendid way in which they (loyally helped by the stewards) handled a big show. Htere was hitch nor an accident. A squad from tne St. Johns Ambulance Corps were present, but were not needed.
