AUCKLAND GROCERS PROSECUTED
FOR SELLING- STEARNS WINE. f ] [Pee United Press Association.] '| AUCKLAND, November 26. '■ At the Police Court to-day the first of a series of prosecutions against Auckland grocers for selling Steam’s wine without being licensed to sell liquor was heard. ; William Winn, the defendant, sold a , bottle of the wine, which, when, analysed, was found to contain 20.6 per cent, of alcohol by volume, 16.7 by weight, 36.1 proof spirit. It was strengthened by port wine. One witness said the flavoring ea- ; scnces were practically all spirit. Dr Bamford said the question was of the greatest imporjrmce to the grocery trade, and would have far-reaching effects. The preparation was medicine, with the contents on the label. It was ostensibly medicine, and the mere fact that it might be intoxicating did not necessarily make it liquor within the definition in the Licenaing Act. Mr Cutten reserved his decision. -
