' The Balmacewen Club brought their season to a close on Saturday, when an invitation to Cavcrsham players to join the hill club was largely availed of. The final in the club's Doubles Competition was al?< played between W. Beekman and C. A Wilson (s) and T. Paul and A. S. Arm strong (s), the two latter being victorioir At the close of the day's play the presider. (Mr O. Balk) took, advantage of the lu<. opportunity they would have of bicldl: farewell to Mr A. W. Martin, who leaving for the Commonwealth, and pi. sented him, on behalf of the member, with a cigar &ase? He was a young Dunedin bowler, lacki much in experience, but for a few minut he drew attention at the Invercargill toi nament. Though not fancying his chain greatly, he had entered for the Sing! Championship; but when he found hur self drawn in the first round against one o the champions, he realised that an extn ordinary effort was necessary. His ver > careful play enabled him to score 1 at tin first head and 2 at the second, but the third found the position so much against hini that he was compelled to his. dernicv ressort —his own patent drive. This du! came off, and the head was burnt. At th.. fourth.head things were against him. an.' once more he brought off an express drive much to his own astonishment, and the head was burnt. The fifth head "was anyhow, from his point' of view 1 , and he resolved to again try a fast one—a little faster than h-s others—and this came oil most effectively, for not only did he burn his own head, but he burnt that of t\v adjoining rink, so wide was the scatter By this time his fame was bruited abroad and spectators were thick upon the bank. His opponent was getting nervous, and inquiring his name and address. But when the next head lay al! against him, the tyro realised that he must do something to sustain his reputation, and his strong right arm was exerted- to the uttermost in a lightning drive, which not only removed the jack out of bounds, but displaced the kneecap of an interested spectator on. the bank. Then friends intervened. It was pointed out to the young player that he had already established a record—he had burnt five heads with'four bowls, and surely honor should be satisfied. Thus appealed to, the novice quietened down, tried to

draw shots, and was decisively beaten at the finish. : . . At the Qamaru Ea6ter tournament the final for the Doubles was won by Dey and Scott (Caledonian), who beat Mitchell and M'Gregor (Cavereham). ■' i
