The Public Library Committee recommend that another table be provided in the magazine ro vn; that the list of books submitted bo 'Obtained at a cost of about £125, and that applications ha invited for the position of lady assistant for the reference library a salary at the rate of £7O per annum. Applicants to undergo a test examination of their knowledge and experience of library work. Authority has been granted to obtain books, etc., as follows : —Ten magazines for the ' juvenile reading room, costing £3 per annum; ‘ London Labor Leader,’ costing 4s 4d per annum; ‘ English Guardian,’ costing £1 6s per annum. The recommendation of the librarian as to newspapers and magazines to be permanently filed, bound, and placed in the reference room, and list of British and other newspapers and magazines, with the periods they should be kept before being disposed of, has been approved. The following offers have been accepted with thanks;— The Mayor of Timaru of a mounted and framed photo of Caroline Bay, Timaru, for hanging in the library building; Mr James Stewart to place ‘ The Vanguard’ in the library. An application by Mr James Neil to place religious* journals in the .library has been declined. The Otago Education Board have been advised that various magazines of interest to the teaching profession have been placed in the reading room of the Public Library, and requested to circularise teachers in the various public schools to this effect. Letters of thanks have been sent to the following for their donations of books to the Public Library, viz. :—Mr C. D. Brent, Cromwell; Rev. John Christie, Roslyn; Mr P. Stewart, Arrau street, Footscray, Victoria; Messrs Ash and Co., Southwark, London, S.E.; Mr R. Sandilands, 64 Queen’s Drive; Mr David E. Theomin, Royal terrace; Mr Mark Cohen, High street; Mr George Joachim, Gatesheath, Mornington.
