BOWLING TOURNAMENT.

Win m Satoday; haf<fc the effect of postWamg nlajjitt the, rink matches for some me >■.?' as originally arranged by the Centre Committee was duly earned ou% although in several instances *i W«re not concluded till eight ©.clock at night, and owing to the failing light and damp greens some players were moreor less at a disadvantage. From a weather point,of view, bowlers have certainly not-.been favored. The most remarkable feature in connection with the play was the very fine all-round play of many of the younger skips, who had entered rinks for the tourney more to pass holidays in the enjoyment of " rolling up than with any thought of winning the section in which they competed. Nor can it be said that only the skips performed creditably. The members of these novitiate combinations proved unmistakably that the newer generation of bowlers have plenty of resource, and in upsetting the calculations of the veterans have given bowling a stimulus that can result in nothing but still greater popularity to so <§Ma a sport. It is almost impossible at Wn stage to say which team will come ont with first honors, but, taking Saturday's play as a guide and with the luck to survive the final game in their sections (to ° e played on Tuesday morning), A. C. M'lntyre (Taieri) should win at Kaituna, T ra (Kaitangata) ot A. Gillies (Dunedin) at Valley, C. J. Payne (Caledonian) and W. Macdonald (Balmacewen) at Dunedin. Both M'lntyre's and Macdonald s teams have won their four games and one o r the other should be heard 6f in the final. The play at Caledonian on Saturday may be said to have been of more than ordinary interest, inasmuch as the vigorous efforts on the part of experienced" combinations to avert defeat from comparatively speaking colts' teams gave the play added attraction. Glover's rink for instance in playing Cormack's (Ca edoman) men kept the latter hard at work, and Otago were only stalled off towards the finish of the game. Excellent games were played by Ewing's (St. Kilda) w d ' ]?• £■ Smith's (Roslyn) teams, but W. G. Hays (Otago) rink in meeting Payne and Co., and making a solid garni ol it, as well 1 as distinguishing themselves in the earlier rounds, have earned their places in * tournament combination. M Laren s (Dunedin) rink is a particularly strong one, but so far they have only won two games. However, they may yet be in at the finish, as a peculiar situation is w ? *2 on the Caledonian Green, w. A. bmith s team have to meet Payne's team, the winner will meet Middlemass (Kaitangata), and should M'Laren beat Hay (Otago), it will take two extra games to decide the winner of B section. The combinations which fought out their engagements at Kaituna were, especi?i7 y i n Y, y°" n g tournament hands, W. K.,Don (Otago), who is fast working to the upper division," distinguishing himself by beating Spencer (Valley), Stevenson (Taieri), and Carter (St. Kilda , while R. Wales also was successful in his games. In section B, A. C. M'lntvre made matters very warm, and finished "up the day with four wins. He has to play bis final section game against D. Forrester, and .should, on Caversham team's Saturday s form, win without difficulty. At the Valley a good deal of interest centred in the play of the Bluff team (T. Crocket, skip). This far-south combination, like many of the local teams playin* is out for the first time, the club having onlv been in existence for two seasons! Bluff team, however, opened the eyes of local players in their execution of good-all-round play, and they were ably captained by Crocket. Of the local men Evans (third for Farquharson) played a faultless game, and Smeaton's team also played well. In B section Brown's (Kaitangata) rink should be hard to push out, although Gillies must be given a big chance. W D Wyatt's (Dunedin) rink were unlucky, and nut for the "element" might have contested section honors.

Dunedin Green wa'< the scene of some well-contested games and very fine individual play as well as being the sward which will long lire in the memory of the trieen Island rink—four losses. Otago Fynmere) team put up first-class games, and W.; R. Gordon's leading throughout the day. was excellent. In fact, the playing of the- team as a whole was good. With Bmst leading for St. Kilda (T. Irvine) and the rest of the team playing steadily, the opposing rinks met foemen hard to beat Their game against C. Tillie and °° - (^ a .T, e . rsham) ™ s a hard-fought one Tillie by the way, is a fine bowler, and Caversham novices should benefit very materially under- his tuition. W. C. Allnutt struggled hard to defeat his opponent in the last game of the day and become eligible to compete in the sectional game. W. Macdonald and Co. (Balmacewen) met A. Baillie (Kaituna) in the fourth round, and a game well worthv the attention of spectators resulted. The" Balmacewen men had won three games, and were out for the next, and Baillie was on their track. Balmacewen, however, were surer of their shots, but it is possibly owing to Thompson that they defeated Kaituna. While giving all credit to S. N BrowTi, sen. (lead), W. Ure (second), and Macdonald (the latter is a most able player), Thompson was a powerful factor in assisting the Balmacewen team.
