YACHTING.

i [By Hi‘[xaki:k.] Yachtsmen who wore fortunate enough, to bo in Broad Bay on Sunday found the. pail homo most enjoyable, there being a liukt southerly breeze and the tide favora’ile. ' , ~ The Petrel, Thelma, P.oma. Wairnana, Laos, Irex, Kiloeu all arrived at their moorin.s in good time. The Pastime, when pear Raven;,bourne, put olf considerable time arguing with a' sandbank the urgent necessity of having these obstacles unmoved from our harbor. APPhci.-un bar evidently [been trying, conclusions with some'jetty, and thereby losing a chip off his boat’s! nose. Inclinations at the present time point to one of the most successful seasons the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Club have had for some considerable period. A great amount of discussion has been caused over the adoption of the international rating rule, and speculation is rife as to the ultimate champion boat for season 19C8-09. I am not going to make any rash guesses until I sen how the yachts’ different ratings pan out. Then there is ocean race for the Fleming Day Cup. This is the biggest event the O.Y. and .M.B.C. have ever had charge of. At the last meeting of the club I understand the race conditions, etc., were hilly discussed and decided. This much-talked-of event will be started in all probability on Monday, the 23th December. 1938. The course is from the Heads (mole light l (o Oamaru and back. This will make an excellent race, and is one that snould .eceive tee hearty support of every yachtsman in the bay. Xow, who is going to enter'.' i lull's? the question. As far as I tan gallirr, the following boats are probable starters ; —Matua, Anonyma, \ agabond. Petrel, Roma. Thelma. Pcra, and Annis. V, bat others’/ Will Professor Scott bring the Vvonnc down - / It is well known that the professor wanted the race to be from Dunedin to Lyttelton, hut as the event is umhr_ the jurisdiction of the local chib, 1 con.odrr the dub did the right tiling ;n making the race to Oamaru only an I back. Iho Myrtle will enter if In r on Her can get away. This race will also practically decide whether the international rule has come to stay or not. Xcxt week f will explain the difference between ihe old linear rule and the new n:!e. Ihe Pei a was amongst Sunday's nnfonumtUv. She .‘truck the bank opposite the clubs properly. and spent a good part cl hie afternoon there, ihe Carbine made an unsuccessful attempt to tow her off. > Curing the week the Waimana and Laiiiblcr were both liMimhed. and enjoyed the"- tbs! :-p not hie season on Sunday. Ihe Ravrnsbwtirno Boating Club held their annual meeting during the week, and horn all a. counts it was a very successful gatnermg. every office excepting that of comnirdoee being keenly contested. It is interesting to note that a huge number of the ollicer." arc new men. Mr H. K. Molltr was re-elected commodore—a verv popular choice. He gave members to uni.et.-land that more care must be exercised by individual members of the club in looking after their own property One member to lose his position as \ ir/'j-ccmiiKuloix* was that hard-working yacnlsman Tom Harridge. Old yachtsmen regret that both the Otago and Ravensbourne ladit Chios have not thought [it to place him in his old position. Tom is never afraid to speak plainly and to the point when necessary, and young members evidently resent being told to do the correct thing. Nevertheless, the dub recognised his knowledge of yachting by electing him as a representative of the Yachting Association. Tho Raveiisbourne Chib have made the new departure of having a paid secretary, Mr C. Ocorge having been elected to that position. One bad feature of this club is that although the subscription is ridiculously low, thirty members have not tin tight it their duty to pay up, and, as the chairman remarked, they are neither use, yn;r ornament. !ne Otago Regatta Committee held their annual meeting on Friday last,

yachtsmen from Dunedin and Ravensbourne "turningup in force. It is satisfactory to note there is a substantial balance from last year, and yachtsmen iv> ; ll rejoice, in anticipation of increased prize-money. The Otago Yacht Club open their season on Saturday. The procession will be on the same lines as last year, Commodore Hanlon taking charge of the motor boats and Vice-commodore Moller, on the Wai- ! *uana, having charge of the sailing boats. -All boats at the conclusion of the procession are to round the commodore’s boat, and salute by dipping their ensign. Mr It. Cook, an old yachtsman, has again generously offered the services of the Citizens’ Band, an offer the club gratefully appreciate. Motor-boat owners have generously come forward and offered the use of their boats. Mr J. Gillanders’s I tine boat The Elswick will carry the band and official visitors, leaving Rattray street 1 steps at 2.30 p.m. sharp. An invitation has been sent to the Photographic Society, and no'doubt a large number will avail themselves of the" opportunity of obtaining some good yachting pictures. The club have ecen extremely fortunate in securing the services of Mr H. Bowie as caretaker, and it is to be hoped memj bers will give him every assistance in carrying out his duties.
