A lieutenant of the Royal Naval Reserve gives some particulars in the ‘Daily officers’ wages in some of the big British lines :—An officer on joining must hold a master’s certificate—some lines demand an extra master’s certificate (the highest there is) —and a commission in the Royal Naval Reserve. An officer with these qualifications will seldom be less than twenty-five years of age, but will have to begin as a junior at £7 a month, and pay for his uniforms, costing at a moderate estimate £ls. The following scale of pay obtains in one of the leading Atlantic lines Chief officer : First year, £l6 per month ; second, £l7: £2l; seventh, £22. First officer : First year, £l3 per month; second, £l4; third, £ls. Second officer : 'First year £ll per month; second, £l2. Third officer : First year, £9 per month; second, £lO. Fourth officer : First year, £7 per month ; second, £B. An officer who joins at twenty-five will be forty-one before he reaches the maximum salary. During all this time, of course, he runs constant risk of losing his employment. The Hilary of a captain varies'from £275 to £6OO per annum, according to the ship he commands; but the number of captains who are paid salaries of £6OO per annum or more is very limited. As little as ; { i rPrvin annum 18 paid to the captains oi ij.uuo-ton Atlantic liners, carrying ’ f rom 1,500 to 2,000 passengers, and £4OO : may be taken as the average pay of the captain of any first class British ‘liner.
