THIRTY YEARS AFTERWARDS.

Great excitement was caused in the small village of Dorignies, in the Nord Department (France), by a sensational confession made to the police by a man named Joly, who was employed in a glass factory. Joly, who is fifty-three years of age, told the police very calmly that it was he who, thirty years ago, murdered a little girl, aged two, whose body was found in a local nver. He added that while at Gijon, in Spain, in 1901, he murdered in the same month two girls, aged respectively fourteen and fifteen. He cut the head' off one and threw the body into the sea. The man further said that he was moved to commit these horrible crimes by an irresistible impulse, from which he had been free for some years; but a few days ago he felt the impulse come over him again. He had already attempted the life of his. own child, and, being unable to resist the terrible impulse which possessed him, he gave himself up to the police as the only way to save himself from further crime. v The examining magistrate who questioned Joly says that he is quite calm, and shows no signs of mania. Nevertheless an alienist has been commissioned to examine him. His family believe that he is insane.
