PUBLICATIONS RECEIVED

‘The.Christ of the Cross,’ in the light of Holy Scripture, by William Anderson, is a 50-page pamphlet on a book of which the majority of people would never have heard had not certain members of Presbytery, here and elsewhere, boomed it into a publicity far beyond its literary merits. The following extract from the preface will indicate Mr Anderson’s standpoint;—“ The book against which I have entered my protest in the following pages furnishes the most painful reading I have hitherto met with, and, considering the quarter from which it emanates, it is enough to make devout Presbyterians blush -with shame, and such men as . . to turn in their graves.” The author “ was once inclined to make allowances for Mr Smith,” but ho now confesses that he has been compelled to take a less charitable view of his position.”

‘ The Girl’s Realm ’ (J. Braithwaite) for September opens with a finely illustrated article ‘ How Great Artists Work,’ and contains among other interesting contributions the following : 1 Holiday in the Isle of Purbeck,’ ‘ A Drill Brigade for Girls,’ ‘ How to Make Jams and Bottle Fruit,’ and the ‘ Training of Girl Musicians.’ The portraits and scenic illustrations are numerous, while the short and serial stories, the poem and comment help to make an entertaining number. ‘ Cassell’s Magazine ’ (J. Braithwaite) for October has no less than nine complete stories, including one by Mary Cholmondeley. The special articles, which, like everything else in this publication, are profusely illustrated, include ‘ How to Furnish a Flat,’ ‘ H. Rider Haggard, Story-writer and Pschyologist,’ ‘ Training an Electric Car Driver,’ ‘ Dressmaking as a Profession,’ and ‘ The Voice and Its Training.’ Pictures, poetry, and miscellaneous items help to fill tb# 110 pages that go to make up the number.
