Mr R. R. Douglas denies that he ever declared in favor of State control of the liquor traffic, as stated, by a correspondent. At the Port Police Court yesterday John Beattie was fined Ids for drunkenness, and to-day a first offender was convicted and discharged. The latter took out a prohibition order against himself. John Scolly, aged forty years (son of a well-known Wanganui resident), was killed by a falling tree at Paranara. Thomas Hyan escaped with slight injury. The Salvation Army self-denial week in Hawke s Bay realised £9l4—an increase of £144 over last year. Mr J. H. Wilheford (ex-M.P. for Auckland) is suing the executors of the late Sir A. J, Cadman and others for £49,500 for alleged breach of contract, arising out oi the sale of the Parapara iron deposits.
