After the business had been disposed of at the annual meeting of the Dunedin Amateur Athletic Chib last night, Mr S. Jacobs (vice-president) presented Mr W. Maclean (president) with a silver sugar scoop as a marriage gift, and referred to the valuable services he had rendered to the club during the past twelve years. Messrs H. Burk, W. Rudkin, and V. S. Jacobs also received wedding gifts. Constable Rowell, of Hampden, has been promoted to the rank of sergeant, and will be transferred to Auckland. /' _ On the occasion of his transfer to Hillside Railway Workshops Mr Cairns was made the recipient of a suitably-inscribed travelling bag, and at the same time Mrs Cairns was presented with a handsome umbrella. Mr Vance presided, and the presentations were made by Mr Fox, who wished Mr Cairns well in his future career. After the parade of the Dunedin Naval Artillery on Thursday last at Central Battery Captain Fredric made, on behalf of the corps, presentations to Lieutenant Phillips, who is about to enter the bonds of matrimony, and to Leading-gunner Geo. Garbutt, who has already taken the step. Both recipients acknowledged the gifts. The death of Mr Herbert Flemming, the well-known actor, is reported by cablegram from Australia. He first appeared in Dunedin on the 7th May, 1877, as Orlando in support of Mrs Scott-Siddons. In 1801 he came here with Miss Louise Pomeroy for the season in which saw ‘ Cymbeline,’ ‘ Antony and Cleopatra,' ‘Twelfth Night,’ and ‘A Winter’s Tale.’ In 1890 Mr Flemming assisted in another well-remembered season, when Miss Janet Achurch presented ‘A Doll’s House’ and ‘The New Magdalen.’ In 1904 he came over as manager for Mel. B. Spun*. In 1805 Mr Flemming appeared with the Brough-Boucicault Company, and had the part of Jack Frobisher in ‘The Walls of Jericho.’ In 1907 he came as joint proprietor of the Brough-Flemming Company, and gave several impressive portrayals, including Andrew Wake in ‘Dr Wake’s Patient.’ Captain Mowbray in ‘ Mrs Gorringe’s Necklace,’ and the Abbe in ‘A Village Priest.’ Tliis year, in April, he brought his own company, and produced ' The Mummy and the Humming-bird,’ ‘ The Morals of Marcus,’ ‘ Olivia,’ and ‘Dr Wake’s Patient.’ He was a good actor, and one who took a stand for the dignity of the profession. The Rev. Andrew Allan, the dietinguiehed evangelist who so successfully labored as a Presbyterian minister in Johannesburg, Glasgow, and Hull, and then gave up his charge for mission work, is an intending visitor to our Dominion about the 26th December next. He intends taking part in the Pounawea Christian Convention on Keswick lines, to he held at the end of the present year, and then, after helping in a convention at Wanganui, will conduct a mission at Invercargill. • At .a later date Dunedin resi dents will have an opportunity of hearing this gifted speaker. Mr Allan 'is at present laboring in Melbourne, doing evangelistic work. His Honor Mr Justice Williams leaves Wellington (where he has been engaged on Appeal Court work) on Monday evening, and will arrive in Dunedin bv the second express on Tuesday. The first sitting he will .preside over will be on Friday, the 30th inst., when he will conduct business in Chambers. The Rev. W. Hay returns to Dunedin this evening from the Baptist Conference, and will preach to-morrow evening at Hanover Street Church upon the voice and spirit of the Baptist Church in relation to the people of New Zealand.
