Moeraki, t.s.s., from Melbourne via Hobart and the Bluff, reached Dunedin this morning, berthing at the cross wharf. She leaves Port Chalmers to-morrow at 5 p.m. for Sydney \ia Cook Strait. Tofua, s.s., the Union Company’s new steamer for the Islands trade, reached Cane Town yesterday morning—a day ahead of her scheduled arrival. After discharging her cargo at Cape Town she proceeds to Algoa Bay, East London, and Durban, thence Sydney. Waiwera, s.s., is expected to leave Dunedin to-morrow for Lyttelton. Karamea, s.s., is timed to leave Port Chalmers on May 12 for Oamaru to load Homeward cargo. Komata, s.s., has been fixed to load coal Jt Westoort next week for the Navy at Fremantle. Orange Branch, turret steamer, is expected to leave Dunedin to-morrow morning for the Bluff. Rotomahana. s.s,, left- Wellington today for Melbourne to enter the Mel-bonrne-Launccston trade. ' Mararoa, s.s., takes up the Rotomahana’s running in the Lyttelton-Welling-ton ferry service to-morrow.

Cape Maria Van Diemen renorts that a large steamer, from west, passed east at 4.30 a.m. to-day. Her signal was flare nn blue, red. and white six times in succession. A Huddart-Parker steamer, from east, passed west at 9.45 a.m, to-day.

Hinemoa, s.s., has landed machinery and material at Cuvier Island for the pnroose of erecting a fog signal there. The two motor launches built for the fisheries denartme.nt have been delivered by the builder, Mr C. Bailey, jun., within four weeks of the placing of the orders, a fact on which he has been congratulated by the officers of the department stationed at Auckland. The launches, which are for the use of the inspectors of the oyster beds, recently taken over by the Government, are handsome craft, comfortably and staunchly built, and should prove admirably adapted for the work for which they are intended. The vessels are 30ft overall with a beam of 7ft sin, and each is fitted with an 8 h.p. double cylinder ’Frisco Standard engine. They have been christened Naumai and Albatross.

A SPLENDID RECORD. During 1907 the Royal Life-saving Institution had fourteen nulling and sailing lifeboats built, fully equinpecl, and placed where they were most needed. The fleet at the end of last year comprised 272 sailing and pulling lifeboats, four steam lifeboats, four motor lifeboats, and one steam tug. The institution’s boats were launched 370 times on service, besides which, on thirty-eight occasions crews were assembled for service. The number of lives, for the saving of which by lifeboats the Committee granted rewards, was 932; in addition rewards were given for the saving by shore-boats .and other means. The lifeboats saved forty-three vessels and boats. The total of lives for the saving of which rewards had been given since the institution wms founded in 1824 was 47,345. Last year one gold medal and other honorary awards were made, with £11,860 in money grants, including pensions, retiring allowances, gratuities, and compensation for personal injuries or loss sustained in the service. The total amount in subscriptions, donations, and dividends received by the institution in 1907 was £75,168, inclnding the very satisfactory ;um of £20,686 contributed by the Lifeboat Saturday Fond. Furthermore, £101,343 was received under the head of legacies, of which the large sum of £45,025 bequeathed by Mr C. G. Ashley was earmarked for special purposes. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS.
