It involved the question of certain South African concessions, and bristled with so many legal and technical difficulties that even experts have occasionally been placed in a quandary. Such a labvrinth of evidence presented itself that a brief outline i k i eftscn^ tacts alone occupied three clear days, and another four were required to read through the voluminous documents which affect the case. Leading counsel on either side were Sir E. Carson, K.G., and r 01 iw! I swlcs > K;C., who had retainers of £I,OOO each, with a dailv refresher of £IOO apiece: Mr Montague Lush, K.C.. K-ok-cr, K.C., were each briefed for £750, with a daily refresher of £75; while four other lawyers had retainers ranging from £4OO to £IOO, and daily refreshens from £SO to £lO.
