ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS.
A ROAD COLLISION. A fatal accident occurred on Saturday at Canvastown, about five miles from Havelock. Rasmus6en Simonsen, sixty-three years of age, was driving a vehicle, and in trying to pass a timber waggon on a narrow road a collision occurred! He was thrown under tho waggon, the wheels passing over his chest, and was killed instantly. POISONED BY TOBACCO. P.A. telegram from Wellington: At the inquest on Jeremiah Houchen, a patient of the Porirua Mental Hospital, who died from the effects of taking a dose of a tobacco mixture used for spraying plants, it was shown that deceased, who had displayed suicidal tendencies, forced open a box containing the mixture, some of which he gave to another patient and took a dese hinis*!. The verdict was in accordance with the evidence, and that no blame attached to anyone. KNOCKED DOWN BY A CAR. At about four o'clock on Saturday afternoon Wm. Ward, an elderly man, residing in Melville street, was knocked down by a tramcar opposite the Post Office. The smart action of the motorman, Robert Brennan, prevented serious results, Mr Ward merely receiving a slight shaking. The head-light of the car was smashed. FELL DOWN A BANK. Thomas Fanning, nine years of age, fell down an embankment at Catlins River, and injured his head and leg. He was admitted to the hospital this afternoon, and treated.
