Jilany suggestions have been made for solving the smoke nuisance. Mid much has been done in reducing the -volume of smoke from large works by the utilisation of mechanical contrivances, but Sir Oliver Lodge would go further and practically abolish the smoke nuisance. His idea is to have tho coal converted into ga.s, both for lighting and heating, at the pit's mouth. It can be made in such a way ;us to economise the valuable products of its distillation, and to giv<s a useful kind of coke ; and then the non-iHuminating heating gas thus very cheaply provided, after such a minimum of purification as may bo thought sufficient, can bo forced along immense mains to the distant towns, just as water is at present supplied.
