N.E. VALLEY COUNCIL.

The North-east Valley Council held their monthly meeting .last night; present—The Mayor (Mr Isaac Green) and Crs Campbell, Harvey, Botting, Howlison, Robertson, Robinson, Mowat, and Evans. —Correspondence.— A number of ratepayers of Pine Hill Terrace wrote requesting that the path be asphalted as far as tho channelling extended.—Referred to the inspector to report at the next meeting of the Works Committee. Messrs Holt and Dunn requested permission to take a few loads of turf from the upper end of Gladstone Township.— Granted, subject to the approval of the property-owners^ Mt E. Barlow objected to certain rubbish being deposited on his property, and desired the Council to see to its removal—Referred to the town clerk and the chairman of the General Committee to act. v The Drainage Board stated that they would be willing to receive a deputation from the Council re extension of outer area at their next meeting. Thev would like a statement of what the Council required. The matter of the drain in the township of Ferguslie would also be considered at their next meeting.—Received, and statement to be forwarded. The Town Clerk notified that the question of reduced fares would be attended to. ■—Received. The Chief Engineer, writing with reference to the Council's request that Watt's road shwld be exempted from the provisions of a clause in the Public' Works Act wliich would cause the road to In; widened from its present width of 33ft to ono of 66ft, stated that the matter would be approved on condition that the building line bo set hack 33ft from the centre of the Toad on each side.—Act to be complied with. H. 1L Morrison notified that Franklin, Fortuna, and Short streets, in addition to Gladstono road, wanted metalling.—Works Committee to report. The Controller and Auditor-Generalnoti-fied that he approved of the reduction of the special rate of three-eighths of a penny in the £ on the capital value made foV payment of the interest on the loan of £9,000 to one-fourth of a jxmny in the £ on the capital value for one year from the Ist April, 1908.—Received and noted. The Dunedin Fire Board enclosed a debit note of £3 for services rendered by the Dunedin Fire Brigade. They also requested that the Council send a cheque for a former account of £4. —Decided that the amount of £5 be paid, but the former account of £4 be declined, as the Council had already contributed towards tlmt expenditure. —Reports.— The Treasurer reported that owing to the rescinding of the Unimproved Rating Act it would now be necessary to determine what system they would adopt in future: that of capital values, whii-h was limited to in the £. or that of annual values, wliich was limited to Jis in the £. During the month the following sums had been paid to the Council's credit :—District fund account. £225 16s 8<1; drainage rate trust account, £l6 10s. Id. Tho bank books showed tho district fund account at a debit of £1,329 19s lid. and tho drainage rate trust a credit of £2i 5o 6d. He recommended that accounts ithe total of £155 6s 9d bo passed for payment.—Adopted. The Inspector reported that five ncv.ivappoinlcd daymen had couitneuced their duties, and were giving satisfaction, i! had employed Messrs Bateman and Joiu-r at repairing old culverts on the Main Noir: road and at works on Montague street. .Messrs Thomas and Craig were surfacing at Opoho and Signal Hill.
