TRAFFIC BY-LAW.
1 TO TIIE EDITOR. Sir,—As- a cyclist, I protest against tlio City Council passing tile proposed bv-law. la my opinion it is unnecessary! and would not bo convenient to business' }wople who use the cycle for business purposes. one councillor suggested registration •rt-ith a. fee of Is, I otter a further sungcstion : that the Council pass a by-law 'making it compulsory- to renter, the Council to issue a number plate," to be attached to the cycle the some as motor cars, and the too to be °6 6(1, the balance over and above the cost of registration to go to making cycle tracks find keeping same- in repair! Xo more tracks to bo put down than there are- sufficient funds to keep in proper order. The reason I .advocate tracks is thk ■ Taking the present track that starts and ends at Rattray street. I propose that two tracks running parallel each side of Cumberland street, alongside the channel*, be continued right on northward'.- ; those tracks to be loin wide. Mv object is to divert the traffic from Prince,-: street. The tracks could be continued up Stuart (street, and likcwi-e any other street leading from the main street as the Council shoukf'think fit. _ As an observant cyclist, I liave noticed the majority of rider.,- who, leaving the Cumberland street track, make for Princes street, so as to gain tho asphalt track, and avoid the continuation of Cumberland street, on account of ite rough state, which it is mibjeefc to with the" heavy traffic. Th«*, I think, is the only rwisonable solution of the difficulty, as there are a number who would voluntarily give towards the upkeep of tracks. There are still a number who would not, and the registration fee would meet the difficulty, therefore making everyone who uses the 'tracks pay for them. Tiling into consideration the wear and teuton tyres, no cyclist should object to the above registration.—l am, etc., . ~ ~ Austral. April 13.
