A TRAMWAY SCHEME.
ELTHAM TO OPUNAKE. [Per United Press Association.] - ELTHAM, December 9. The report of Mr Black on the tramway scheme from Eltham to Opunake is favorable. A 2ft 6in gauge track, with no ramifications or side lines, is recommended, with a lolling stock of nineteen cars and trailers, giving a speed of fifteen miles an hour for u passenger service. The source of power recommended is “producer” gas, the generation to bo on the alternating current principle. The station and converter station are to be miles apart, and at equal distances from either end of th,o rout e. The capital expenditure’ is estimated at £119,070: the revenue at £18,835 per annum ; and the expenditure, including capital charges, at £17,481, leaving a profit of £1.554 for depreciation. An alternative scheme, <lfi Inf (IB AurOTil road (fourteen uulos), would cost J269.Q57, and leave a yearly profit of £194. Eaponga could be supplied with light and power at a cost of £1,710, and Opunake | at a cost of £1.670. 1 It is impossible to supply power and . light along the route or to Eltham. A ! separate scheme to light Eltham would cost £7,455, and show a profit of £503.
