For the first time in tie annaJs of Ameri can courts a man has been sentenced by hi 3 wife to a term of imprisonment. Samuel Smith, of New Jersey, who has tired the Recorder wilh frequent appearances m court and his promises of better behaviour, consented to allow a chax<r e 0 f drunkenness, disorderly conduct, and furni ture-smasiuug to be left to the judgment of hi* wife-
Mrs Smith, at tho invitation of the Re corder, took her seat 02 the bench, and said ■ "You go to gaol for thirty days, Sam i can support myself and the five children sTou are a drunken brute, and I cp i't live with you any longer, and I guess I don't want you hanging around my house for at least a month. You may acquire habits of industry in prison, but I have my doubts." " Madam, you are a credit to the bench '' said the Recorder, as ho bowed Mrs Smith to a seat in court.
The Judge, in order to meet the law, confirmed the sentence and tigned the necessary warrant.—■ Evening Standard' correspondent.
