NEW VENTILATION SHAPE AT KAITANGATA MINE.
Coal has been struck at a depth of 553 ft, which is within a few feet of the estimated distance. A little over 200 ft in coal has to be driven to tap the mine at the extreme east end of the workings, when the vexed question of defective ventilation will become a thing of the past. The contractors, in the sinking, averaged 92ft a month. They have completed their work, which was earned out under the supervision of Mr M. Carson, sen., most satisfactorily. The strata have been favorable for making a good shaft, no running ground being met with, but principally good standing conglomerate.
