The Evening Star SATURDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1906.

Our representative, chatting about the new dock, haa been informed that the excavations arc getting near to the final bottom. There aro no, indications to tar of trouble with the water. The gantries are to be moved to facilitate the completion of tho work. Two justices of the peace, Mr T. Ross and Mr W. Crawley, sat at the Police Court this morning, and remanded to Oamaru a man named Robert -vlexander Hogg, who was arrested yesterday by Detectives Cameron and M’Leod on a charge of obtaining £7 by false pretences from George Marshall at Hampden on the Bth September. Mr Brown-Dune appeared for tho accused. The absurd story'that “three of the leading” grocers were moving to alter tho half-holiday from Wednesday to Saturday is still as absurd as it was. All tho leading grocers are strongly opposed to it. What is taking place is this : A petition is being circulated and is meeting with fair success (so its supporters say) among the smaller shops in the outskirts of the town, and to a less extent in tho town itself. ’ The opponents of the petition point out that some of tho signatures aro those of grocers who employ no labor, and that therefore there is not much good-will 16 employees at the bottom of it. °On tho contrary, they say, the idea is to intercept some of tho cash business which is done by the real leading grocers on Saturdays. The Dunedin Drainage and Sewerage Board forward the following as the rain statistics for tho past week:—December 17, ,020 in ; 19th, .060 in ; 2uth ,540 m ; total for the wejk, .420 in. The total for 1906 to date is 17.680 in.

In notifying Premier Bent of their decision to close the Melbourne Public Library on' Sundays after the end of the year, the trustees state that thd attendances do not justify its being kept open on that day. So far the average attendance has been 276, while three times that number visit the picture galleries and museums. In preparing the specification for the new o:gan at First Church, tho contingency of having three additional stops at some future date was considered —two on the choir organ and one on the pedal. Mr Timson is in the happy position of being able to have the two new stops for the choir organ included in the specification now, as they have been made a prescut of, by whom we are not at liberty to state. One of these will be on orchestral ♦dioe (an Bft solo stop). iho other will also ho an Bft stop, probably dulciona. Mr Timson is anxious to have the pedal stop also included in the specification. A 16ft reed pedal is a atop of great grandeur, and' would, if added, considerably enhance the cScct of the full organ. An Auckland manufacturers’ deputation informed the Hon. Mr Millar that owing to the scarcity of girl labor and the exceptional activilv of' trade, their position was so acute that ono large firm bad taken their traveller oft the roads, being afraid to take more orders Thev asked for assisted immigration of oirl labor. The present proportion was 2,000 males to 700 females among the workers. Mr Millar congratulated the trade on the prosperity, and said that if they could supply evidence that orders were refused through the scarcity of labor, and if, as ho understood, the unions raised no objection, he would instruct his inspectors to report with a view to recommending assisted immigration as proposed. The stipulations, he said, were necessary, otherwise the Government might be dragged into a general system of assisted immigration that was not now desirable. Mr Sidev, M.H.R., has received the following telegram from the Minister of Works: —“Re men employed on Moegicl duplication works. With exception of few men transferred from Dunedin station yard works who had proved themselves specially qualified, all the men engaged on work at'present time are men who have been recommended by one or other of the Dunedin members. So far as tho question of single men is concerned, 1 gave instruc lions on the 16th inst. that married men were to have preference of employment, and that single men who had already been employed were, after they had been on for a time, to make way for married men. Instructions were also given to increase tho number of men employed, but I cannot ]>ossibly find work for all who are applying.”
