ENGLISHMEN" v. WANGANUI. In yesterday's game Wanganui batted fifteen and fielded thirteen men. Rapid rungetting by the Englishmen were the opening features, 70 being as the result of twenty-five minutes' play. The century was hoisted with one wicket down, and then Johnson was dismissed by a brilliant catch at the second attempt by Turner off his own bowling. The fielding with few exceptions was very loose, and Harrison’s century (reported under our late Press news last evening) was due largely to his being let off several times in the early stage of his innings. With nine wickets down for 453, Wynward declared closed. K. H. Cave and R. H. Pcarpoint opened Wanganui’s innings to the bowling of Torrens and Simpson-Hayward, the latter bowling slow underhand lobs, which puzzled the batsmen. In his second over Pearpoint was tempted, and fell to a good catch in the longficld. Ji H. Wilder made a single, bat then succumbed to a break-back from SimpsonHayward, the two wickets falling for 9. G. Marshall then appeared, and with Cave brought the total up to 60, when the firstnamed touched one from Douglas, and Wynward snapped him up in the slips. Turner followed, and after scoring a single put his third ball from Simpson-Hayward into Wynward’s hands. Stumps were then drawn, with four wickets down for 65.
