WORK AND WAGES.
i AMALGAMATED SOCIETY OF CARPENTERS AND JOINERS. The fortnightly meeting of the above • society was field last night, when one of the largest gatherings of members took place, the' roll-call snowing an attendance of eighty-seven members. The meeting was in a particularly happy mood. Word had been received from the Executive that tho continuous levy of 9d per week, which had been on for eighteen months, had boon reduced to 3d per week. This levy was to meet the largo unemployed expenditure in Britain, which has been absorbing £BO,OOO per year. Tho President congratulated members on the way that they had stood 'by the society during this trying time, and expressed tho hop© that their fellowtradesmen at Home had at last turned the corner leading to prosperity. Bro. James Brown was then presented by the branch members with a purse of sovereigns for services rendered. Bro. J. Beeson, xn making the presentation, referred in flattering terms to the excellent service rendered by Bio. James Brown as secretary during the past two yearn, and hoped that ho would continue to hold his position for some time to come. Bro. Brown, in acknowledging the presentation, referred to, various reforms which were required to ensure the success of the branch. It was also resolved to write to the Executive airing , them to call the newly-elected general councillor (Bro. Hampton) to their first meeting, whicb will be held in 'Manchester in
June next. Bro. D. Thompson, on behalf of the members, wished the officers the compliments of the oeacon, after which the meeting closed.
