FIRES.

Shortly after three o'clock yesterday afternoon the Fire Brigade were called out to a fire which had broken out in a fourroomed house in Stafford street, above Maiti;*T»d street, occupied by Mr Geo. Connor, bricklayer. Thanks' to the energies of some neighbors, who had got to work with a small hose, the fire was pretty well extinguished by the time the brigade lad reached the top of the hilL Some of the furniture was damaged both by fire and water, and the dividing wall between two of the rooms was destroyed, otherwise the damage was not serious. About &30 last evening the Fire-Brigade received another call, .this time to the boarding-bouae occupied by Mr W. Toney, at the comer of Dowling and View streets. A fire had commffnfipd m the ground floor,, but it was easily extanguished before much damage was done. The fire is supposed to have originated in some sawdust surrounding a figh-pxesßare boiler. The furniture is insured for £2280 in the Standard Office CHRISTCHURCH, December 21. A fire broke but in A. J. White's furniture factory this morning, but was confined to the shed in which it originated. Tbo fire got a good hold, and before it was extinguished did daniage to the extent of several hundreds. The insurances are not available.
