Bishop Verdon congrat-nlat<ed the Christian Brothers and the pupils on the succcsrftil termination of the year's wnrk. From time to time dnrin? the year be had been kept informed of the work at. the school, of the regular attendance of the pupils, of the close attention paid toeindirs, of the cheerful obedience of the boys to the instructinns and directions of their teachers. He. had oiso visited the nchool. and was pleased at the correct and intclDgcoi -way in vhich the pupils answered the interrogations pat to them daring their examination, and this had given him very great pleasure. While the toys were attending to their secular studies they wwo also attentive to the study of religious doctrine and to their Christian duties. To one who occupied the position he did that was a matter of very great, joy. He was abo pleased to hear of the success of the boys in their XrtP. It was necessary and highly deeirr that boys should have recroaikm aod sports, and where thoo recreationa and sports were carried not as tbey were at the Brothera' School —where they were not allowed to interfere with studies and school work —tbey were of great benefit in developing the. pupils physically—and be had beard w'rth great pleasure of the success of the schoolboys at the fchoote' athletic competi- : tiona. arid he was sure they were all grateful to the Christian Brothers for the assistance they had given in this matter. It "was very gratifying tiiat tliey had in the community such excellent—"such good—schools i as those presided over by the Christian Brothers, ami he. would .say that no better teacher* could he found in any part of the wcrld than were to be fonnd among the Christian Brother.*. In the Duncdm nchools ! ihn Brothers labored with great diligence

and ability, and they weno thoroughly effi' cieirt and zealous in the work, of education in which they were engaged. TJiey aimed at giving a good secular education, and at the same time-a good, sound ndigiat» edncilion. For tho religious mstmetion given "at tho school he (Bishop YcrtJon) ielt deeply grateful, and he could assure tho Brothers thai their efforts in this matter were folly appreciated, and bo hoped they would ba bene ior many years to carry on their good work. The aim of their tearhing was to direct tho pupils toeerve God faithfully, to be good ■atixens, to be useful in the world, to bo good Chi iaiions and good Catholics. — (Applause.) Mr J- B. Caflan, jun-, proposed a vote of thanks to the bishop for bis attendance that evening, and for his continued interest in the schools. Tho excellent restdts attained by the teaching of tho Christian Brothers were apparent by the creditable manner in which their pupils acquitted themselves in public competitive exzunnn&iaons year after vear. The one unfortunate thing they had to regret was that oo few took advantage of the opportunities that tbs achodVs offered in the matter of secondary nastrocj tkm- The reason of this was that tbt majority of pupils left school when they i passed the Sixth Standard. Their ■cbooij ! had not the- advantages of free phmes at I liigh schools and scholarships which wtK available in the State schools, but during I the coming year it was intended to pnt iorward an effort to remove th* disadvantage to seme extent. A movement was on foot

among some of tie old boys to do tamething mthe way of getting up some echoiarfihips which would be available for deserving and promising boys who, if they had not some assistance, would not be in a posrtion to contimie their studies. —(Applause-) Mr T. Hussey seconded the moticrj. which was carried bv ncdanialjQn. Tbo Christian Brothers return their sincere thanks to the following for their donations and prizes to the prize fund : —Be v. Fathers Coffey, Howard, OTtefflv, Corcoran. Meters Secular and Co., Speight and Cn.. Geerm, Hairy, and Co.. W. Conghlan, .1. Dculan, J. Coliins. J- B. CaDan, jun., a friend, P. Haliy, T. Layburn, T. Rossbotham, Tynan, and J. Salmon, a friend, i Messrs Havman and Co. (medals), Messrs I Bremner and Mob- (medals). Mrs- Gollar, Mrs Heffernan (Sooth Donedin), Mrs WiUdc:-. Mrs Rossbothasn. ST. CLAIRTho break-ap at tho St. Clair Sebooi this morning lasted from 9.30 to 10.30. The children decorated the gymnasium very tastefully. There \m an exceptionally large attendance of jxirents and ex-pupds, the occasion being of .special importance owing to the departure of Mis Marchbanks (who leaves for Wellington) and the loss of Mi;s Walton through the reducing of the stag on account of the fall io the attendance. Mr J. F. M. Fr.isei. the first chairman of committee, Rent a note regretting hj» inabuitv to h»> present, and expressing his best wishes for the prosperity of the -(school. Mr T. .1. Walker, chairman of committee, presikd. He remarked that fbe year just eaded. the eleventh of the echoofs existcace, had nr-t. been one of tlte most forturiste, inasmuch rm infitterae bad interfered with the attendance, and the school had <lropp«l a grade, owing to families being •driven out <<f the district by the failure to get- a reduction in tb-7 tram fares, besides which the school was losing Miss Marchbank!", but nevertheless there wa» cause for tliankfulncss in that tho emciency of the s:lkx>! lind l'.vm woll maintained and the good record of the children in the roatfpr of" behaviour in the streets, was still unbroken bv a single compfcimt. These things indicaxed effective teaching and di-cipiine and aosxl home training. On beliolf of Ihe pnpils and ex-pupils he presented Miss Marchbanks \«ith a travelling case and a Irrtter from the committee enibnjvin;; a r«*>!ut>on of thanks and apprean re.-ordi'd in the mhnrtes.
