OTAGO ART SOCIETY.

The annual exhibition of the Otago Art Society opens to-morrow in the Choral Hall. A private view of the pictures afforded today gives the impression of an exhibition fully up to the average of late years, exhibits arc up to the usual in point of number, and in point of quality the general level is quite satisfactory, while there is practically an absence of immature works unsuitable for public scrutiny. There is a shipment of pictures yet to arrive from Sydney. they missed the last boat, hut their hanging will not be delayed beyond Monday'; and they are to form a separate exhibit in another room. The works already hung come from all over the colony. Among local artists Mr W. Allen Bollard has nine paintings, and amongst some oxer 1, exit work are ’The Kakannis,' 'Moonlight,’ some seascapes at Island Bay and Ocean Beach, and a bush scene on the Leith. Mr G. W. Carrington’s name appears among local exhibitors, and bis two pictures," a view of Dunedin from Bine Hill, and a seascape are certain to attract attention. Miss Grace Jco! show? a. portrait of Dr Hockon, and Miss Mabel Hill one of her father. Most of the other local work is landscape. Misses Gillingham, Passmore, Hartley, and -Mr O’Keefe all having one or more works hung. Among the rather few iiizuro paintings those of Mr fS. L. ihom<on Christchurch, stand out. while from the’ Cathedral City Messrs Madden and Bowring are also exhibitors. From Wellington" a number of Mr G. I'Binder's pictures have been sent, including a taking scene of Antwerp from the Scheldt.
