■ 4. [Pan Ukttkd Press Absociatiox.] BLENHEIM, September 26. A Chinaman named Philip Falkner was yesterday fined £lO on a charge of being illegally in possession of a preparation of opium. The mixture seized had been analysed by the Government analyst as such. A second charge of smoking opinm was dismissed, owing to insufficient evidence. An appeal is pending. Charley Chow Sing, market gardener, Picton, was committed for trial on a charge of gravely assaulting a boy aged ten, a resident of Picton, who had gone to the Chinaman's place for vegetables. ITie Licensed Victuallers have decided to state a case in the Supreme* Court in reference to the Wairau Licensing Committee's resolution ordering the rebuilding of certain hotels. Mr H. D. Bell, of Wellington, has been retained. NEW PLYMOUTH, September 26. At the Supreme Court John Comrie was sentenced to eighteen months for horse stealing. GORE, September 26. A fire at Mataura this morning completely destroyed two shops and dwellings occupied by Cross, fishmonger, and EncdV hardt, draper and general dealer. No contents were saved. Insurances: Cross, stock and furniture, £l2O in the Sun; Enzlehaxdt, £4OO in. the Roval. The premises 7 eT LT 64 > Bacb and were insured for £2OO with the New Zealand Company. GISBORNE, September 26. Dr jiell, Government Geologist, after a general examination of the district, says that excellent indications of high-quality oil are to be found, but before he could definitely advise as to the actual locality at which boring operations should commence he would require a detailed survev to be made of districts within a radius of twenty miles where indications exist Dr Bell thinks that it is for want of such survey that oil-boring has been unsuccessful in the past. The wells appear to have been put down in a haphazard way. The Gisboroe Oil Company will make representations to the Government in order .to have a detailed survey made.
