NEW PLYMOUTH.

The Supreme Court opened this morning, Judge Cooper presiding. Henry Skecn, for attempted serious assault on a .married woman on tho Mataroa road, was sentenced to ten years' imprisonment. The Judge said that ho would have given a lighter sentenoe and floggings had prisoner been physically fit. This was a case for an indeterminate sentenoe. Stephen Gannon was sentenced to two years for forgery and uttering a cheque at Hawera. There were several previous convictions against Gannon, whose downfall, the Judge said, was partly attributable __to drink. His Honor dwelt on the laxity of business people in accepting cheques from strangers.
