Captain A. Monro (sailing master of the dredge Whakariri) has been appointed wharfinger to the Wellington Harbor Board. There were sixty-nine applicants. The teachers of the Ravensbourne Presbyterian Sunday School, in conjunction with the Bible classes and tihe Committee of Management, tendered a social and presentation at Ravensbourn© last evening to Mr Georg© D. Ross (their late suprintendent). The Rev. W. Niecleon. pxesided, and made tlio presentation, which took the form of a Bible with illuminated fly-leaf, bearing the following inscription ; —’“To Geo. D. Ross from tire teachers of +he Ravensbourne Presbyterian Churdr Sunday School, as a mark of esteem and for valuable 'services.” Subsequently a member of the Session (on behalf of the Deacon's Court and parents) presented Mr Ross with a rug and silvermounted umbrella, irritably inscribed. , Mr Ross replied feelingly, after which a number of musical items brought a pleasant evening to a dose. Mr M‘Carthy, S.M., is not yet sufficiently recovered from his sudden illness to resume dutv. His medical adviser has instructed 'him to take a fortnight’s rest. Mr Burgess, S.M., of Queenstown will preside at Invercargill' during Mr M‘Carthy’s absence. . His Worship the Mayor and the town derk will leave for Wellington on Friday next to attend the Municipal Conference. A Melbourne message states that Dr Pain has refused the bishopric of Bendigo. Mr John Dixon, representative of Messrs Boosey and Co., who was present at the last big brass band contest in the North Island, has left London on a tour of the Mediterranean, India, Australia, and New Zealand. H© is well known to brass bandsmen in all parts of the world. Mr C. Holdsworth. general manager of the Union Steam Ship Company, who has been absent on a visit to Australia, returns to-Dnnedin on Tuesd^.,
