TRAMWAY MATTERS

TO THE EDITOR. J Sir.—l, for one, should very much Tike to'know who is responsible for the idiotic token system of payment on thetramcars. I. cannot imagine Mr. Goodman inaugurating such a. stupid charge, and in a letter the other night I read that it was not the new tmffic manager. Well, who was it! The City is paying large salaries to men to manage the tramways, and these men are evidently only dummies—having to do as they are told* by men who never saw an electric tram outside of Dunedin. I am looking forward to the new traffic manager's report and suggestions, and I trust he will speak out and say what, he thinks without fear and trembling. Whilst on the subject, might I suggest to the man.vger a return to the season tickets. Should he' recommend, it, I am sure he will have the support of the public Say, for insta:ue, a quarterly ticket at Ws over all the trams. If only I,OCO tickets were sold (and that is alow estimate), why, he would have £2,000 of the public's money at the beginning of every quarter to pay t his wages for three months. Also, do away j with all concessions and equalise the dis-| tances—i.e., carry St. Clair passengers the j same distance from the post office as they j carry Caversham passengers at 2d. If '. this were done carefully,'there would be no need to reduce the fares to any great extent. —I am, etc., Ohakticlrkr. August 6. THE WORKERS' DEPUTATION. r«p I Mr. RTMTOR. Sir, —It has been pointed out.to me that my remarks as one of the recent deputation to the' Hon. T. T. Duncan led many to think that 1 complained that men were not paid extra for overtime at the railway" 1 engiiw sheds. I wish to correct this. It was the railway goods sheds that ife wag ■■'' stated worked men till all hours without paying extra for' overtime, whereas the--; Tunning sheds, on the other band, paid ls ; 6d per hour for overtime. As, far as T know'i of the looomotiv* department, I aav* bo hesitation in stating that this department of our railways is the most acceptable to the outside casual worker of any in the service. Why this should be so -'e a puzzle we desired the Minister to explain.—l am,;, etc., :;■■ Stjjvk. Boreham. ■ August 6. ■.,:.,.-/: ,■.:.
