Randies (Unionist), 4,953; Mr Guest (Liberal), 3.900. [The Cockennouth Division of Cumberland was rendered vacant by the death of Sir Wilfrid Lawson, the temperance reformer and Radical politician. The electorate is somewhat fickle in its political allegiance. In 1900 Sir J. S. Randies won the seat by 209 votes, and lost it in 1906 by 563.
