UNIVERSITY COUNCIL.

The regular meeting of the Council of the dtago> University, held thia afternoon, was attended by Mr James Allen (Vice-Chan-gUor), Dr Burns, Dr Hocken, the Rev. W. Hewitson, ALr'iianiol Stewart, Dr Shand, the Rev. A. Cameron, Professor Sale, Dr CbwolyM* T. K. Sidey, and Mr Leslie H. Harris. - • -Mr Jame? Allen'reported that he and Mr Sidey. had investigated the matter of the Museum reserve, under occupation of the Union street School, and on which various buildings have beon erected. They exposed dissatisfaction with the present occupancy, but suggested that a temporary lease be given at 10? a year, the plans of any proposed buildings to be s*" mitted to the Council. The Registrar reported that this decision had been communicated to the Education Board 'and the Union street School Committee, but no replies had been received. The Vica-Chancellor also reported as to the arrangements that had been made about the political lectureship. Mr W. Dpwnia Stewart had kindly offered to read with the one student who desired to go on, and his offer had been accepted.—Toe Council confirmed this arrangement, and tendered their thanks to Mr Stewart. The Registrar reported the various accounts to stand as follows:—General ae:ount: Month's receipts, £1,375 89 9d; n.ontb's expenditure, £1,030 4s lid; credit balance at end of July, £1,122 13s Id. Building account, £54 8s 2d to credit at tank, less £3B 10s 2d cheques outstanding; credit balance at end of month £ls 18s. The Council accepted the following tenders for repairs to the Museum building ; Painting ,outside woodwork on the main building, A. Lees, £26 ss; making good with iron the back roof and repairing buck door, C. W. Wilkinson, £25 10s ; repairing Hlating, J. James, £ll. The tenders for inside work wore referred to the House Committee for further consideration. It was resolved that a sub-committee, r-onsisting of the Vicc-Ghancellor, Dr Church. Mr Sidey, Mr Stewart, and Mr Harris, be appointed to prepare a case and to submit it to the Government in support of a claim for the payment of £16,000, representing the debt incurred on the University buildings. On the motion of Mr Sidey, it was resolved—"That this Council tender their heartiest congratulations to the Hon. Robt. M'iSab, he being the first graduate of the University of Otago to attain Ministerial honors."
