AUCKLAND v. OTAGO

The first intcrprovincial hockey match played between representative teams of Auckland and Otago took place at the Caledonian Ground this afternoon. Some 700 persons were on the ground at 1.30, when the match began. The teams were represented as follows:

Auckland.—Goal, W. R. Bloomfield; fullbacks—H. D. Hill and R. Anderson; halves —C. R. Crispe, D. K. Porter (captain), V. C. Kavanagh; forwards—J. Jessup, R. B. Young, F. R. Mason, W. Lepine, J. Lepine. Otago.—Goal, N. White; backs—E. Ackroyd and Hobey; halves—G. G. Austin, H. Goodman, J. Moore; forwards—J. Hobbs, R, Sise, B. Midgeley, T. Cuttle, Rutherford ; emergencies—back, Purchas ; half, Cowie; forwards—Madill, Siedeberg, and Begg. J. C. K. Sibbald controlled the game. Midgeley beat Mason for bully. Cri.-p placed the ball well to W. Lepmc, and Mason following up, Lepine placed it to him, but he was not up fast enough. The ball was soon taken back to the Otago line, and Young (inside left) scored a nice goal for Auckland. I—o. From here the ball travelled rapidly to Auckland's line, .where good, concentrated Dlav between Midgeley and Rutherford saw the latter centring nicely. .The goal was cleared,\however, by Bloomfield. Otago were now' attacking strongly, and Cuttle made a fine at goal that went outside the posts. Auckland here conceded a corner, nothing resulting. Otago forwards still kept the upper hand. Nice passing between Auckland forwards brought the ball to the Otago line, but White saved well. An obstruction by an Auckland forward gave Otago a free hit, and from this ulay went well down the line, Rutherford leading. Combined attack bv Auckland brought the ball right'down to Otago's line/but a "stick" by a forward gave Otago relief. So far Otago haS had slightly the worst of it, hitting recklessly and losing tho ball. Hobey. Otago s left full-back, was saving splendidly. Auckland backs fumbling. Hobcy shot the ball to his forwards, and Otago had a gpod opportunity, but the Auckland goal-keeper (Bloomfield) saved tho shot magnificently. A fine rush by the Auckland forwards again had Otago in trouble, but White saved well. This led to a counter-demonstration by Otago. and the ball was taken uo into Auckland's circle, where Cuttle shot a fine goal. I—l. Otago continued to press hotlv. and the Auckland pcal-keener had a pood deal of work to do. From a roll in Otago's twenty-five the ball was taken into Otago's circle, and J. Lepine shot an easv goal. Auckland 2—1." Strong attack by Auckland resulted in Otago conceding a long corner. But the tables were soon turned, a fine massing rush concluding when Rutherford shot wide. \
