SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

NOTES FROM CANTERBURY

[SpECTAI TO THE STAB.J

CHRISTCHURCH, August 4. After a wintry spell the weather is no brighter, though it is not eo warm as it was during the earlier half oi last month. The tracks at Riccarton are wet and dirty, but the schooling course provides fairly good going, and as the authorities occasionally condescend to throw open the outside of the course proper, trainers are seldom stuck for galloping ground. On Thursday, which was a " galloping * morning, the proceedings were very interesting. Signalman beat Chryseis over a m le in lmin 54f sec, and Buluwayo cleared right away from Gaiicho over a mile, which was left behind in the same time. Phaetontis, Sol, and Baritone 6trone freely over a mile and a-quarter at working pace, and Stronghold was restricted to thTee-'niarter pace work. Makaroff. though not fully extended,. defeated Alexis bv four lengths over six furlongs in lmin 25|sec. and The Guesser was much too good for Tirole in a schooling gallop over hurdles. Tirole seems to have trained, off. Kremlin and Cavalry ran completely away from Slow Tom over a mile in lmin 54sec, but the lastnamed could scarcely have been doing his best; and Playfair showed to advantage in a gallop with Mawhiti. Irish did useful work, and Recruit and Wi Waka outpaced Jack Snipe in a schooling wallop • over the big fences. Shrapnell and Black Revnard, easing, galloped a mle in lmin 54-fsec. Eurns, Narei ■fus, and Rongoa gave a capital display of fencing over the steeplechase country, but they were going at little better than hunting pace. K'atere galloped a mile and a-quarter at three-quarter speed. The influx of visiting hordes still continues. Fancy Work and a two-year-old half-s : ster to Replete arrived from the North on Tuesday morning. Neither is engaged at the Grand National meeting. Manazona, Black Friar, and Heroism put in an appearance on Wednesday, and Lvri't, Medallist, Pushful Outer, Nogi, and Nadador got down this morninz. Polyanthus and Hikaroa are expected to-morrow.

The event of the week was the indifferent display of schooling given by Kremlin in a schooline gallop _ with Black Reynard on Wednesday morning. He fenced very slowly, and will have to go a great deal better In public to win the Grand National Hurdle Race. Black Reynard, on the other hand, jumped capitally. Tri6h and Playfair gave an excellent exhibition over the big fence on Wednesday, and the Ancklander outpaced bis.companion on the flat.

After working on Wednesday morning Pipi was unmistalccably lame, but it proved to be nothing more serious than a tenderness caused by a tight shoe, ?nd disappeared directly the shoe was removed. For a beginner; Stronghold gave quite a creditable display over the hurdles on Wednesday. It was his first performance over the big hurdle*. All the Grand. National Steeplechase and Hurdle Race candidates to whom I have not referred are doing well. The stallions Gipsv and Castashore are in the private sale ilst. iMr G. G Stead's recent purchases. Drought and Dreamer. hßve arr'ved from Australia. They will visit Multiform this seison.

Tt has been finally decided that, Mr Stead's team for Sydney fihall consist of Tsolt, Porcelain, Huascar. and Bomform. The la>-t named i* a two-year-old, a full brother, to the defunct Sungod. Tresdir.il! will stard this season at Riocarton instead of remaining at his owner's stud at Stonyhurst. I suppose we may interpret this' as a sign that Sir Georov Clifford intend." that Qnarryman shall be mated with the Stonyhurst ir.ares. The North Canterhnry Jookev Club held a pports meeting at Rangiora on Thursday. The gathering was cor fined entirely to local horses, and few outriders were among the spectators. The Hack and Hunters' Steep'echa'e went to Drer layer, by Linstock; the Hack Race to Gold Bang's, by GortonFairy Queen; the Hack-and Hunters' Flat "Pnce to Waihene. by.Fleur de Lys; the F"nters* Steeplechase to C'ndere'la, by Phnefcn—Ap»rima; and the Hunters' Welter Plate t« Powder and Patches, by'Phaeton—Burlesque. _ At the Sov;;i_Cmi v erbttry Hunt Club meeting, held at Timaru on the «ame day. the all-oonquerin? Ellworthy brothers wpre beiten in the Club Cup. r V.-trt won the owfters-up Steeplechase and the Tally-ho Plate.

Tn chronicling the arrivals at Riccarton I omitted to ment : on Waiwera and PrinceCThmg, who got down on Thursday. The pair were tried over the fchooling' fences yesterday afternoon, bat Waiwera gave a most inglorious display, refusing repeatedly, and hG*jnay be dismissed from the calculations over the biff- steepleeha» •
