THE EXHIBITION.

FIRE INSURANCE TARIFF.

[Special to ths Star.]

CHRISTCHTJRCH, August 3. Mr C. M. Gray, M.H.R., chairman of the Executive Committee of the Exhibition, thinks that the tariff fixed by the insurance companies is unduly high. Instances have been brought under his notice to show that the Exhibition will likerr suffer in consequence. The premium asked upon a single exhibit—motor car—is likely to amount to £6O during the time the Exhibition is open, and a firm who have taken space contemplate forfeiting that space. The position is dua to the non-adoption of. Superintendent Smith's recommendation in regard to fire prevention measures in his report to the Executive Committee. Mr Smith made certain recommendations. These included the employment of a permanent staff of five firemen and a foreman, with provision for a fire brigade station in the buildings, and an efficient system of fire alarms, a supply of steam for the fire engine, th« necessary lengths of hose, some hand engines, and other appliances. This schem* was rejected.
