MAORI HILL COUNCIL.

An ordinary meeting of the Maori Hill Borough Council was held last night; present—the Mayor (Mr S. N. Brown). Cn? Duncan, Smith. Butler, Booth, Buttcrfkld, French, and Gibson.' ' —Correspondence.—

P. J. Ness wrote asking (prior to making' arrangements in regard to building on section 6, block 8, Upper Kaikorai district) M-hether the present level of that portion of the road contiguous to his section is the permanent level.—Referred to Works Committee to report. A number of ratepayers wrote in' reference to "tho impassable nature" of Cannington road, with a view to having the construction thcieof put in hand at an early date.—Works Committee to report -Mrs Seddon wrote acknowledging with expressions of gratitude tho Council's resolution in regard'to the death of the late Premier.—Received.

A letter was ieceived from Barclav and Bolt, instructed by Mr Tanner, formally brmging under the notice of the Council the matter of certain injurv alleged to have ken done to Mr Tanner's kind and fence by the construction of one of the Council's reads past his place. The !etter gave particulars of the damage •complained of, which Mr Tanner estimated '> at £2O, and which was formally claimed for accordingly.—lt was decided that the Council indicate to the claimant's solicitors the decision they came to iu-March to mnslate Mr Tanner's-fence :is it stood, but repudiate the present claim and the Council's Liability in tie matter. S. K. Garswell wrote adiing for an asphalt footpath in front of his shop and oil'enng to pay a proportion of the cost.—lt was decided-that the footpath be asphalted from the tramsheds a.s tar as kerbing and has' beeu done, half-cost to be charged to tho respective owners of adjoining properties.

J. A. Johnstono wrote forwarding rates duo and asking for some improvement in the state of tiio road adjoining iiis property.—Referred to the members lor the -ward to act.

H. fikcy applied .'for--a.-crossing from the main roati to the Icotpath opposite his gate. —Referred to inspector, witn power to act. Lewis Law&on, Woodhaugh,' appealed for attention to the roads ;.in the Valley, between tue Town Belt-and'the paper-millfi.— Cr Smith stated that certain Valley ratepayers had several tunes pulled down the barriers that the Council,' in 'their- interest, had put on the front road.—The inspector was empowered to scrape the road complained of.

Five ratepayers wrote calling attention to the state of the footpath in Bunvood avenue and asking for improvement.—Rererred to nieiubeis for the ward, with power to act.

The Town Clark. Dunedin, wrote in answer to the Council's letter of 6th ult,, asking at what price the City would be jnepared to supply -electric energy for power and lighting, skitiug that the electrical engineer desired information as to the amount of energy that would probably he required. —Received.

A. R. Barclay, M.H.R., forwarded a letter from the Aetiug Postmaster-General, stating that arrangements would be made for the forwarding of telegrams fiom the Maori Hill bureau, and that the question of the charge•' for the delivery of telegrams would be considered later.—The- Mayor expressed the opinion that the concessions pioinised were j;ot enough, and that the Council should agitate for the establishment of a post and telegraph office in the dis-trict.—-It was decided that Mr Barclay be thanked for what he had done in the "matter and approached at an early date in accoidance with the mayor's suggestion. P. R. Sargood wrote" suggesting the need of an asphalt crossing above, his front gate. —Referred to tho members for South Ward with power to act. ... _"•'' The District Healtb Officer wrote asking the. " .-■■':- —'Financial.— The. bank book showed an overdraft of £428 19s lld,_ and the Mayor stated that since last meeting-a large amount of money for rates had come in, so that it was not necessary for the Council to carry out their resolution to seek further consideration from the bank.—Cr Duncan .was added to the Finance Committee. —GeneralSeveral matters requiring attention were brought forward by different councillors.
