In connection with the scheme recently outlined by Mr John Bums, President of the Local Government Board, for assisting the unemployed, the Government have entrusted Lord Carrington with 4.000 acres for the purpose. Other Crown lands will be treated similarly when, the existing leases expire.

A deputation representing the Parliamentary Conuxittee of the Trades Union Congress, the General Federation of Trades Unions, and the Labor members in Parliament, submitted to Sir H. Campbell-Ban-nerman and Mr Sydney Buxton (Postmas-ter-General) their objections to.the large amount of preference that was given to time-expired soldiers and sailors for employment at the Port Office and otter branches of the public service, to the prejudice of the ordinary labor market.

It is reported that Sir H. Campbell-Ban-nerman's reply was satisfactory.
