THE WATER STREET CROSSING.

TO THB KDIXOE. Sir, —At yesterday's meeting of. the City Council it was stated that the actingengineer (Mr Richards) was against the laying down of a level crossing at the intersection of Water street with Princes street, between the Post Office and Exchange buildings. The reason' assigned, or given, was because of its insanitary effect. Wherein the " insanitary effect" comes in is beyond my comprehension". He might just as well condemn all the street crossings in ; the City in like -manner. Surely he doesn't want an overbridge crossing at that particular street; because, if he does, the City Corporation will'have to borrow a further sum to increase their stands now at £95,000--to, make all crossings alike. If Mr Richards would examine the wood paving (kauri) at the bottom of Stafford.street he would there see workmanship second to Let Mr Richards " stick to his desk " as town clerk, and leave the "insanitary" crossings and mud-scraping business to the inspectors.—l am, etc.' . /„ Manuka; Angnst 2.
