WHAT LONDON POLICE COST.

How many policemen are there in the London metropolitan force, and how are they paid Ihe answer may be gleaned from the police accounts for last year, officially issued last May. Numbers and nay may be set out thus;—. 1 J t- c iii Per annum, o chief constables ... £650 to £BOO r ol superintendents ... £520 to £420 009 inspectors £l3l to £346 2 8o sergeants £95 to £l5B 14,403 constables £66 to £92 17,212 Ihe superintendents have an allowance (£ll to £ls per year) for uniform, and there are allowances to the lower ranks for clothing and boots, sergeants and constables also drawing money for coal. The total ordinary expenditure' on the police last year was £2,235,576. The bulk of the income was jlcrived from the local taxation account (£809,330) and rate warrants in the metropolitan parishes (£1,054,527) As much as £208,093 was received for the services of the police specially employed at the Houses ox Parliament, Post Office, museums, Home Office, Tower, Royal Palaces and elsewhere. Private individuals and public companies paid £13,998 for special service. On the expenditure side there are interesting items :—-Lanterns (supply, trimming, ana repairs of) and oil, £4,689; extraordinary expenses incurred in the’pursuit, apprehension, and conveyance of prisoners, etc., £27,165; gratuities, rewards, and extra duty pay, £8,716; and clothing and plain clothes allowances and accoutrements, £91,316. We may mention in this relation that the plain constables’ pay in the less wealthy, less responsible cities of New York, Chicago, and San Francisco is from 960d0l to 1,200d01—i.e., £192 to £240 a rear!
