THE DUNCAN-JOHNSTON INCIDENT.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I trnst you will insert this letter in the interests of football and fair play. In your issue of the 24th ult. “Referee” made special reference to the above, and lo say that his remarks were one-sided is putting it very mildly. This week he returns to the subject by quoting extracts from papers, who no doubt base their conclusions on what they read in his (“ Referee’s ”) notes and the report of the O.R.F.U. meeting. “Referee” knows as, well as I that there was not a particle of truth in the statement made by Johnston, and that Paton and Whelan were prepared to state that he (Paton) had the ball when damped by Johnston. I quite agree with 44 Referee” that it is a pity that the referee’s word is final, but I think in this case it was a good thing for Johnston, as the line umpires and several prominent members of the Alhambra Club and Rugby Union officials who were present quite dgrocu -with Duncan, <ukl considered ho was justified in what he did. In conclusion, 1 would like to offer “Referee” this bit of advice: If you wish to make your football notes enjoyable reading, look at the game with two ©yes, and lose that Red-and-Black eyeglass.—-I am, etc. . ■ , All Black. . August 1.
