Tho Water and Lighting Committee reported that they had been in communication with several gas and electric companies regarding the lighting of the borough. The City Council had written asking if the borough was prepared to take electricity in bulk and reticulate for itself, or if the City Council would be at liberty to enter and reticulate on terms to bo laid down by tho Board of Control. The Committed replied asking for a quotation of the price for electricity in bulk, and also a copy of the terms whioh the City Council purposed assisting the Board of Control to issue. Clause 2 of the report read as follows:—Your Committee have had under their consideration a map of tho borough prepared bv your engineer, showing the areas capable of reticulation (1) from Ross Creek reservoir ; (2) from Maori Hill reservoir; and (31 from your natural supply at Mount Cargfll. Your Committee d&em the latter source of Bupply of so much importance that they would like your engineer's report fortified by that of an outside engineer, a course which your own engineer (Mr T. Arnold) i 3 also anxious should be adopted. Your Committee therefore ask that they be empowered to obtain from an engineer to be named by you a report upon tho Mount Cargill source, of supply, and also that they be empowered to confer with your solicitor on the subject of riparian rights.—Cr Green moved the excision of clause 2 from the report. By its retention the Council would be involved in additional expense." Until the negotiations with the City Council on the question of a water supply were either completed or abandoned the Borough Council should not think of going in for a water supply of their own. Some day, also, the borough might amalgamate with the City, and tho water supply spoken of would not then be necessary.—After some discussion by councillors, th© report was eventually adopted on the casting and deliberative vote of tho mayor. —General.— Tenders for the supply of 60 cubic yards of quarry metal and 75 cubic yards of metel for tho Gladstone road were opened. As on© of the tenders was not signed, it was decided ■to call for fresh tenders.
